Winter in Paris

Spring is just around the corner, and I honestly couldn’t be more excited. This winter in Paris has been a blur of seemingly endless gray, rainy days. I generally try to be optimistic and have a positive outlook, but I admit that isn’t easy when the constant threat of a downpour and bitter cold winds have you locking yourself indoors, refusing to step outside unless absolutely necessary. I also fully admit some of you probably live in cities that see much colder winters than we see here in Paris, so perhaps we haven’t had it that bad…Still, I’ve never been fond of cold weather and likely never will be.

When it snows…and in Paris that’s a rare occasion…there is something magical that happens in the city. Paris looks truly beautiful under snowfall. So, I braved the cold and ventured outside to discover a snowy Paris. City streets somehow look so much cleaner under snowfall. The fallen snow quickly began to freeze in the cold, and in Paris, where the city is rarely prepared for this kind of weather, everything starts to shut down. It is, however, the perfect excuse for everyone to take a snow day. It almost makes me feel like a kid again, waking to find that school has been cancelled and your entire consists of nothing but curling up with a blanket, watching Oprah and Full House…only now my daytime TV viewing has turned into Netflix binging. The Seine, too, had once again risen to heights I saw only three years ago. The river waters completely covered the banks of the Seine, where picnic-goers usually enjoy spreading out a blanket while sipping wine and nibbling on cheese. Light posts and treetops peeking out of the water, it was a sight to see.
